About The MYG

About Us

In March 2012 the Maritime Youth Group was established by a small group of volunteers who aim to help provide opportunities to young people and instill a sense of pride and achievement in them. Their motto is "Tantum Optimum Satis" which is latin for "only your best is good enough". We aim to educate and support young people to become confident, motivated, educated law abiding citizens. The activities we do keeps both boys and girls off the streets and we encourage them to learn new skills with plenty of team working events.

We feel our cadet group is beneficial to the areas where we have units located Perry Barr, Bristol, Wallsal and Fairford area as there is little in the way of activities for the young people to do after school and weekends. We work in conjunction with the local police and community; we also work alongside other youth groups and organisations outside the local area. We believe this enables us to help reduce the anti social behaviour within the communities’ younger generation.

We provide the young people with a safe, secure and happy environment, where they take part in activities such as sailing, canoeing, cooking, bushcraft, first aid and much more. Many of these activities encourage team building, leadership, confidence, self esteem, personal skills and life skills.

We encourage our group members to become involved in community events and where possible we like to put on displays for the local and wider community. We have links with other voluntary groups and come together with them to participate in different events and activities.

Also available to MYG Cadets are off-site activities including many fun and educational courses, where they can obtain qualifications which could benefit them in their future careers.

All the staff are volunteers and give up their time freely, to help the young people in our community. We have a Constitution, A Child Protection Policy, Insurance and Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) checks are carried out on all staff and volunteers working with the children.

All the members of Staff and Committee give their time and efforts voluntary and are endeavouring to keep the Maritime Youth Group going by fund raising. We are at present a small organisation that is always working towards funding opportunities and ways in which to expand and enhance the experiences of our members . We are totally self sufficient and we also encourage the young people to help themselves to keep their Group going by taking part in fundraising events such as bag-packing at Supermarkets, In-store collections, Fête’s, Fun days, raffles and Sponsored Events.

We Are Like a Family

The MYG is all about fun and learning valuable life skills and the safety of our cadets and staff is our highest priority; therefore, the wellbeing of every cadet and staff member is put before any activity we carry out.

We never put anyone in harms way, or into an uncomfortable situation. We pride ourselves on being like a family –supporting everyone within it, and helping one another along the way.

As well as progressing through the ranks, our cadets can achieve many greatthings which will help them as they grow.

We know just how important it is to be able to move into adulthood with as many life skills as possible, such as leadership, teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills, creative and critical thinking, assertiveness and empathy – just to name but a few.

Every oneof our cadets will be given the chance to learn these skills and many other formal qualifications along the way, ensuring that whatever they choose to do in life, they are as prepared as possible for the future.

Consistency

Throughout your time as a cadet not only will you will be awarded your first rank and your uniform, which you can wear with pride. You will become a fully fledged cadet, meaning that you will have the opportunity to  take part in our regular training programmes.

Each member will be able to strive for excellence and achievement. In recognition of these achievements and standing within their Unit, they may receive an additional promotion, working their way through the ranks to a more senior rank introducing the cadets to structure organisation and responsibillity.

Becoming a cadet within the MYG can be a life-changing experience. Being a cadet will give you the opportunity to take part in a huge range of exciting and adventurous, military-themed activities. There is something for everyone and you make friends for life along the way.

Activities

The MYG offer a wide range of activities and courses for our cadets and staff to take part in.

As well as our structured training syllabus, fun and challenging watersport based activitiesare a large part of what we do.

But there are other types of activities that we undertake which provide help within our local communities.

When we say ‘activities’ we don’t just mean fun and games. Activities also include helping others, whether that be on community projects and events, or supporting other charities and organisations that might need our assistance.

Each section will have its own focus, and key activities. There are some parts of the training that are common to all sections though, and all of which help build your skills, your confidence, and which look great on college, university or job applications.
